1975年11月，巴黎，犹太极左翼活动家皮埃尔·戈德曼的上诉听证会即将开始。他因四起武装抢劫被判终身监禁，其中一起导致两名妇女死亡，但他否认了谋杀指控，拒不认罪。随着这场庭审被媒体大肆报道，戈德曼被塑造成了一位左派知识分子的浪漫英雄。而与此同时，戈德曼与他年轻的律师乔治·基曼的关系却日益紧张。戈德曼难以捉摸、雄言善辩，即使冒着被判死刑的风险也始终在宣扬自己的理念，让这场庭审变得愈发混乱。
